Each season Girls on the Run serving Maricopa & Pinal Counties identifies and selects a dynamic group of coaches to lead each of our teams of 8-15 girls. Coaches are parents, teachers, school administrators, college students and other community members who are committed to developing and celebrating our girls.

Head Coach Overview

The Head Coach is a volunteer position that works with a team of coaches to facilitate the Girls on the Run curriculum to program participants. This position entails approximately four hours per week for a 10-week commitment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Head coach must be a woman
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • CPR and First Aid certified
  • Must consent to and complete a background check
  • Attend Girls on the Run coach training
  • Attend all (two) practices per week for a weekly time commitment of approximately 4 hours
  • Have fun!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a role model for program participants
  • Prepare, organize and supervise weekly lessons
  • Collaborate with other coaches for successful lesson delivery
  • Facilitate communication with parents/guardians of program participants
  • Participate in the Girls on the Run 5K
  • Plan and coordinate your team’s end of season celebration

Assistant Coach Overview

The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach at a Girls on the Run program site while serving as a role model and mentor for program participants. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for a 10-week commitment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must consent to and complete a background check
  • Attend Girls on the Run coach training
  • Able to attend practices once or twice per week
  • Have fun!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a role model for program participants
  • Assist with all aspects of the facilitation of weekly lessons
  • Collaborate with other coaches for successful lesson delivery
  • Participate in games and workouts with the girls
  • Participate in the Girls on the Run 5k

Junior Coach Overview

The Junior Coach is a volunteer position for older girls to assist the Head and Assistant Coaches at a Girls on the Run program site. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for a 10-week commitment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Junior Coach must be 16-18 years old
  • Must be a high school student
  • Attend Girls on the Run coach training
  • Able to attend practices once or twice per week
  • Have fun!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a role model for program participants
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down of games and lessons
  • Provide one-on-one attention to program participants
  • Participate in games and workouts with the girls
  • Lead an activity with assistance and supervision of the Head Coach if desired
  • Participate in the Girls on the Run 5K

ARE YOU A COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER LOOKING TO BE MATCHED AS A COACH WITH A SITE IN NEED?

Please note that most teams practice after school in the afternoon. Site needs, locations and times vary each season. We are so grateful for your interest and do our very best to match interested volunteers with a site that can work with their availability. However, we cannot always guarantee an opening that fits your desired schedule/location.

TIMELINE:

The Fall Season begins late August/early September and runs for 10 weeks, meeting twice a week and ending in late November/early December with the end-of-season 5k running event. Coaches are asked to apply by June 1st to volunteer for the fall season.

The Spring Season begins in late January/early February and runs for 10 weeks, meeting twice a week and ending late April/early May with the end-of- season 5k running event. Coaches are asked to apply by October 30th to volunteer for the spring season.

At least two coaches are assigned to each group of girls. Coaches meet with the girls usually immediately after school, two days a week for 90 minutes, for a 10-week season. Opportunities are also often available for volunteers who can only coach one day per week via shared positions.
