Each season Girls on the Run serving Maricopa & Pinal Counties identifies and selects a dynamic group of coaches to lead each of our teams of 8-15 girls. Coaches are parents, teachers, school administrators, college students and other community members who are committed to developing and celebrating our girls.
The Head Coach is a volunteer position that works with a team of coaches to facilitate the Girls on the Run curriculum to program participants. This position entails approximately four hours per week for a 10-week commitment.
The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach at a Girls on the Run program site while serving as a role model and mentor for program participants. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for a 10-week commitment.
The Junior Coach is a volunteer position for older girls to assist the Head and Assistant Coaches at a Girls on the Run program site. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for a 10-week commitment.
Please note that most teams practice after school in the afternoon. Site needs, locations and times vary each season. We are so grateful for your interest and do our very best to match interested volunteers with a site that can work with their availability. However, we cannot always guarantee an opening that fits your desired schedule/location.
The Fall Season begins late August/early September and runs for 10 weeks, meeting twice a week and ending in late November/early December with the end-of-season 5k running event. Coaches are asked to apply by June 15th to volunteer for the fall season.
The Spring Season begins in late January/early February and runs for 10 weeks, meeting twice a week and ending late April/early May with the end-of- season 5k running event. Coaches are asked to apply by October 30th to volunteer for the spring season.
Please see our calendar for season-specific dates and events including mandatory coach training.
At least two coaches are assigned to each group of girls. Coaches meet with the girls usually immediately after school, two days a week for 90 minutes, for a 10-week season. Opportunities are also often available for volunteers who can only coach one day per week via shared positions.
