For Berkeley, Girls on the Run has been more than an after-school program. It has been a place to build friendships, discover her strengths and experience the power of belonging.
With the encouragement of her mom, Kelly, Berkeley has grown up embracing new experiences, celebrating her accomplishments and learning to believe in herself. As her biggest advocate, Kelly has always encouraged Berkeley to recognize her strengths and see the possibilities ahead of her.
When Berkeley entered third grade, Kelly knew she wanted her daughter to experience Girls on the Run. As a former Girls on the Run coach who helped establish the school's first team in 2011, Kelly had witnessed firsthand the confidence and life skills the program helped girls develop. Years later, Berkeley became the first girl with Down syndrome to participate in Girls on the Run at her school.
Berkeley quickly embraced her time at GOTR, especially the activities, lessons and opportunities to spend time with her teammates. Through the program, she built meaningful friendships, developed relationships with trusted adults and learned valuable skills like positive self-talk and using her I Can! Power.
One of the most meaningful examples of the program's impact happened outside of practice. When other students were being unkind to Berkeley at recess, one of her GOTR teammates stepped in, found an adult to help and made sure she was okay. It was a powerful reminder that the lessons learned at Girls on the Run extend far beyond the program, encouraging girls to show empathy, stand up for others and be supportive friends.
At our recent Limitless Potential Brunch, Kelly shared Berkeley's story and reflected on what the program has meant to their family.
"Each girl takes their own pathway to the finish line, but every girl, and I mean EVERY girl has the strength to achieve whatever they dream is possible for them. And the possibilities are endless!"
Berkeley's journey is a beautiful reminder that every girl brings unique strengths to her team. Through Girls on the Run, she found a place to grow, build confidence and celebrate what makes her uniquely herself, while inspiring those around her to do the same.
